Most dealers in the USA will ship goods to Europe (a few are unfortunately not prepared to do so, they are included in this list but marked).  The good news is that North American prices can often look shockingly attractive to European buyers.

Don't Forget Shipping

The first bad news is that for some items (notably paper) the carriage charges can end up being a significant fraction of the total cost.  The US Postal Service have a calculator for shipping costs which may give you some idea of what to expect.

The Joy of Tax

A North American dealer won't ask you to pay any local sales taxes he would ordinarily have to collect when selling to a local buyer.  When the postman arrives with your parcel, though, you may find that your local government has other ideas: he may well ask you to pay a combination of the following charges before delivering your package:

  • Import duties will depend on the goods shipped: some goods such as computer software attract no import duty at all.
  • Value Added Tax (VAT) varies depending on goods and your local government's VAT policy.  For example, in the UK, books attract no VAT but pretty much everything else including any shipping charges is taxed at 17.5%
  • Clearance charges are due to the company (such as ParcelForce in the UK) who cleared the package through your local customs service and thus arranged for the first two charges.

Example

As an example, I recently purchased $200 worth of computer software from North America for which the insured shipping charge to the UK was about $20.  The charges were:

  • No import duty on computer software.
  • VAT at 17.5% on $220: $38.50 (£25.51)
  • Clearance charges: £5.25

So, on this order, shipping, VAT and clearance came to about $65, or say 33% on top of the "headline" price.

If you have an example of your own for some more representative shipment, please let me know and I'll incorporate it here.
